When To Fish In Maine
Open Water Fishing Season: April 1st – Sept 30th
April 1st – May: (Wading) Rivers & Streams for brook trout and landlocked salmon. As soon as the ice is out in northern Maine we head up there. This is some of the best spring streamer fishing but warm clothes are a must.
June – July: (Wading & Canoe) Some rivers, streams, and ponds for brook trout and landlocked salmon. This can be some of the very best dry fly fishing in Maine but bring the bug spray!
August: (Float trips) Penobscot River watershed for smallmouth bass. Smallmouth bass are so aggressive during this time and smash topwater flies and lures!
Sept 1 – Sept 30: (Wading) Rivers & Streams for brook trout and landlocked salmon, IF we get some late August rain. If we do not get rain and cooler temperatures, then we are still bass fishing or fishing larger rivers in northern Maine. By the end of Sept we can usually get back into our streams and rivers and the fall colors are gorgeous.
October – March: (Wading) Some larger rivers stay open all year around as they are stocked with trout.
